absolutely agree; i think the reason current apps are 'simple' is because they're focused on user acquisition -- what's the simplest thing that can be put together in order to acquire users? that's what's driving current app design... at least for a large majority of apps.
that said, there are many apps like Movies (Flixster), iRead, and iLike that have a lot of interesting features & depth of engagement that is likely very 'useful' to their users.

Thanks for stopping by! Yes, it would be so great if "useful" were redefined here to encompass whatever is engaging to the user. In the end, that is certainly what counts. Depth can be thought of in so many ways, and entertainment should most definitely be part of the mix.
The user numbers, and even more so the engagement metrics that Facebook migrated to, speak for themselves!
